Assistant Professor
Dr. Shipan Das Gupta
My research group have extensive research experience in molecular cloning, gene transformation in crop plants, tissue culture, and related molecular biology techniques. Currently, my research group is focused on evaluating the zoonotic risks associated with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacteria transmitted from poultry to humans. To achieve this, we isolate pathogenic bacteria from poultry and characterize their functional properties using a combination of microbiological and molecular biology tools, including whole genome sequencing. In parallel, our group is also working on the development of drought-resistant, high-yielding rice varieties. This work involves both somaclonal variation and advanced genetic engineering approaches, such as the transformation of salt-tolerant genes and functional assessment of their performance.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Shipan Das Gupta was born in Cox’s Bazar and raised in Chittagong, Bangladesh. He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Chittagong Collegiate School in 2003 and his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from Government City College in 2005. He went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Chittagong, graduating in 2011 with the second-highest academic standing in his class. In 2014, Dr. Das Gupta was awarded the prestigious “Scholarship Plus” from the University of Bonn, Germany, to pursue his M.Sc. studies. Upon completion of his Master’s, he was accepted into the international graduate program iGRAD-Plant, a collaborative Ph.D. program jointly offered by Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (Germany) and Michigan State University (USA). He successfully completed his Ph.D. in 2018 and continued his postdoctoral research until March 2019. In February 2019, Dr. Das Gupta joined Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, where he continues to serve. During his tenure at NSTU, he has supervised over 12 M.Sc. thesis students and has published more than 16 research articles in Q1 and Q2-ranked international journals. His research group focuses primarily on bioinformatics, microbiology, and molecular biology.
